MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (MFA) OPTIONAL

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security mechanism that requires more than one method to authenticate individuals logging into the system.

To prevent unauthorized access, the system will now require users to go through MFA when logging into the system.

MFA is accomplished by the system sending the user a code, which in turn, the user will enter into the system for verification. Users have a limited number of attempts to correctly enter the code.

For a short period of time users will have a grace period where they will be allowed to log into NPPES without going through MFA. During the grace period, each time the user logs into NPPES, they will be taken to a page where they will be given the option to log into I&A to set up their MFA.

After the user sets up their MFA, the user can then return to NPPES and log in.

Once the grace period has passed, users will be required to set up their MFA in I&A, as well as, go through MFA when they log into NPPES.
